Markham

Located to the north-east of Toronto, Markham is the largest municipality in York Region and refers to itself as Canada’s “High-tech capital”.

Like many places in the GTA, Markham has grown considerably in recent years. According to census data, in 1996 it had a population of 173,383 and this almost doubled in the next 20 years, rising to 328,966 in 2016. There are many reasons for this dramatic increase in population: Markham’s proximity to Toronto, the GO trains services in the city that enable quick transit to downtown Toronto, the impressive quality of local schools, and the availability of large single-family homes on lots much bigger than found in many Toronto neighborhoods.

With the growth in population and the development of a distinct new downtown area that is home to many large companies, Markham has matured form a small town to a large, modern city. The development continues, with the downtown and other business areas providing convenient homes to several high-tech companies and increasing the local job opportunities, and innovative ideas like a new York university campus to encourage more people to make the city home.

In order to house this rise in population, there have been many new home and condo developments in Markham over the last two decades and the development is likely to continue into the foreseeable future. Many new condos in Markham are concentrated along the highway 7 corridor and in the downtown core, although some are located elsewhere and generally close to train stations or other transit. Meanwhile, with lots of land to the north, there is plenty of room for continued development of new homes by local developers.
